The Challenge

  • Determine contributing factors in collapse investigation
  • Establish accountability and best practice for future building safety policies

On June 24, 2021, Champlain Towers South (CTS) in Surfside, Florida, experienced a partial collapse, resulting in the tragic loss of 98 lives. In the aftermath, stakeholders needed comprehensive geotechnical insights to determine contributing factors, support investigative efforts, and establish accountability.

The Solution

Geocomp performed a comprehensive geotechnical and geo-structural assessment, combining advanced site investigations, laboratory testing, and numerical modeling to analyze potential failure mechanisms. Key efforts included::

  • Subsurface Investigations: Drilled boreholes, performed standard penetration tests, cored foundation elements, and conducted geophysical measurements.
  • Forensic Testing & Data Analysis: Assessed soil behavior, foundation settlement risks, and potential long-term impacts on CTS stability.
  • Numerical Modeling: Simulated external influences, including groundwater variations, adjacent construction, and foundation conditions.
Through these detailed analyses, Geocomp identified key contributing factors that may have led to structural vulnerabilities and potential settlement issues.
