The Challenge

  • Bridge preservation project and inspection needed on the bridge
  • Critical bridge to Boston’s infrastructure, with a need to maintain the longevity of the bridge

The Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge is a critical transportation link in Boston, carrying eight lanes of I-93 traffic and a connecting ramp. Given its scale, importance, and as part of bridge routine preservation efforts, ongoing monitoring of its stay cables and structural dynamics is essential for long term performance, safety, and early detection of changes in condition.

The Solution

To support development of an upcoming bridge preservation project, Geocomp provided:

  • Deployment of S-lynks wireless vibration measurement system for efficient, minimally disruptive data collection across 116 stay cables, the main span, ramp, and towers
  • Use of Operational Modal Analysis (Snap-D) and Cable Tension Estimation (CTE) software to determine cable tensions, resonant frequencies, mode shapes, and damping ratios
  • Comparison of estimated cable tension values with historic records
  • Establishment of a dynamic baseline for comparison with future data collection and analyses.
