The Challenge

  • Significant risks of ground movement, deformation, and operational safety
  • A monitoring program was needed for early detection of movement or stress

The Montgomery Dam Lock, located along the Ohio River, is undergoing a major upgrade to accommodate larger barge traffic. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is constructing a new 1,200-foot lock chamber—requiring the installation of massive cofferdams both upstream and downstream.

The Solution

Geocomp was selected to design and implement a comprehensive instrumentation program, delivering real-time insights during every stage of construction, including:

  • Deployment of hundreds of survey prisms monitored by Automated Motorized Total Stations (AMTS)
  • Installation of nearly 60 automated inclinometers to track subsurface movement
  • Monitoring with over 200 vibrating wire piezometers and automated crack meters to measure structural and ground behavior
  • Development of a custom data logging system to streamline installation and manage large data volumes
  • Centralized data access and visualization via iSiteCentral®, Geocomp’s secure, web-based platform
  • Expert technical leadership and field support as a trusted partner to the main instrumentation subcontractor and geotechnical engineer
