The Challenge

  • Critical upgrades were needed to enhance the structural integrity of the dam
  • Upgrade the dam to meet modern safety standards and protect downstream communities and water resource management

Geocomp was contracted to develop a monitoring and response plan and perform slope stability monitoring in near real-time. Once implemented, Geocomp would be able to provide the contractor early warnings of sudden dam failure for the safety of workers and the structural integrity of the dam and its intended function.

The Solution

Geocomp was chosen to consult and provide monitoring on this project for our innovative solutions and expertise in geotechnical engineering, especially on dam safety and geotechnical instrumentation. Services provided on this project included:

  • A Trigger Action Response Plan developed with the owner and contractor to provide baseline movement levels, determine threshold levels, and communication & action protocols.
  • Performed a historic 4-year baseline study using satellite Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) prior to the start of construction.
  • Provided near real-time slope stability monitoring with multiple alarming systems (email & phone alerts; local radio connected to audio, visual, and vibration alarms in the field office)
  • Developed a centralized data management system using iSiteCentral® for geotechnical data and automated daily and weekly geotechnical report generation – customizable via Microsoft Word.
