Test Method Title

Standard Method of Test for Unconsolidated, Undrained Compressive Strength of Cohesive Soils in Triaxial Compression

Reference Number

AASHTO T 296

Material

Soil

Test Property

Undrained Strength

Description of Test

This test method covers determination of the strength and stress-strain relationships of a cylindrical specimen of either undisturbed or remolded cohesive soil. Specimens are subjected to a confining fluid pressure in a triaxial chamber. No drainage of the specimen is permitted during the test. The specimen is sheared in compression without drainage at a constant rate of axial deformation (strain controlled). This test method provides data for determining undrained strength properties and stress-strain relations for soils. This test method provides for the measurement of the total stresses applied to the specimen, that is, the stresses are not corrected for pore-water pressures.

Number of Test Specimens

3

Test Specimen Size

Cylindrical specimens with a minimum diameter of 3.3 cm (1.3 in) and a height to diameter ratio of between 2.0 to 2.5. Maximum particle size shall be smaller than 1/6 the specimen diameter.
