Three New Rock Tests

Expanded Rock Testing Capabilities

GeoTesting Express, a subsidiary of Geocomp Corporation, is pleased to announce the addition of several standard rock testing procedures to its list of capabilities. The new capabilities include: Punch Penetration, Cerchar Abrasivity, Acoustic Velocity and Dynamic Elastic Constants.

The Punch Penetration test is used to reflect and model rock failure during rock comminution using downhole drilling tools, horizontal directional drilling tools, tunnel boring machine and microtunneling tools using disk cutters, and tungsten carbide insert disk cutters.

Cerchar Abrasivity is used to correlate the effects of quartz content, mineral fabric, and rock abrasivity index on tool wear for estimating drilling tool life and cutter disc life.

Acoustic Velocity and Dynamic Elastic Constants testing allows calculation of dynamic elastic modulus and dynamic Poisson’s ratio. Ultrasonic measurement of rock properties is useful to predict static properties, rock mass properties (with the use

Global Reach
Geocomp’s Lab Systems division is making inroads into several new international markets. According to Dr. Rachid Hankour, director of Lab Systems, “these markets in North Africa, Eurasia, Southeast Asia, and Australia were particularly hard to crack, as they have traditionally been a stronghold for British-made soil-testing equipment.”

In Malaysia, Dr. Hankour was the keynote speaker for the first short course entitled "Application of Automation in Soil Behavior Investigation"

Geocomp is penetrating these markets by responding to the growing needs of today’s customers who want modern, automated equipment that can be used for fast production, teaching, and advanced research.

Geocomp is uniquely positioned to meet these new demands by offering the most technologically advanced universal testing equipment with benefits that no other brand has. To name just a few:

  • Tests can be monitored and controlled over a network.

  • One PC controls several testing stations, saving money and space.

  • Modular design that allows same unit to perform different tests by only changing software and test cell.

  • Measurements units can be changed between SI and English at any time, which provides great flexibility.
  • Full automation through all the test phases (place test cell, program system, wait, print report).

Geocomp has recently supplied equipment to laboratories for the following clients:

  • Highway Department, Ankara, Turkey

  • Housing and Construction Center, Cairo, Egypt

  • Portcoast Consultant Corporation, and TEDISouth, Vietnam

  • Kolej Universiti Teknologi Tun Hussein Onn (KUiTTHO), Malaysia

  • Swinburne University, and South Queensland University, Australia.
