W. Allen Marr, Ph.D., P.E., a civil engineer and President and CEO of Geocomp Corporation,
has recently been awarded the Distinguished Engineering Alumni Medal from UC Davis College
of Engineering and the Cal Aggie Engineering Alumni Association.
As a UC Davis engineering graduate with more than fifteen years of professional experience,
Dr. Marr’s record of outstanding professional and technical achievement as well as his
distinguished service to the engineering profession and the community at large, set him
apart from other nominees for the award.
Dr. Marr’s significant contributions to engineering include developing techniques for
monitoring the stability, movement and pressure in earthworks projects, using sensors,
wireless communications, automated analysis and visualization of data. By developing
sensing, monitoring, measurement and analysis technologies, Dr. Marr has enabled full-scale
construction projects to be built more safely and efficiently, at lower cost.
During his career, Dr. Marr has consulted on such enormous projects as Boston’s
multi-billion dollar Central Artery Tunnel; Dulles Airport; the new World Trade Center
construction and the Woodrow Wilson Bridge in Washington, D.C., as well as projects in
the Netherlands, Japan, Venezuela and Korea.
“I am very much honored to receive this award. Civil engineering doesn’t draw the
attention in today’s world of info, nano and biotechnology, but civil engineering
provides the environment that makes these other fields possible. It is civil engineering
that will play a major role in solving the global challenges of food distribution,
providing fresh water, and slowing global warming,” noted Dr. Marr.
Dr. Marr holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the UC Davis College of
Engineering and a Masters degree and Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology. His many contributions have been widely published and he serves on a
number of professional society committees and boards.
