Test Method Title

Bulk Density ("Unit Weight") and Voids in Aggregate

Reference Number

AASHTO T 19

Material

Aggregate

Test Property

Bulk Density Unit Weight Voids

Description of Test

The dry aggregate sample is placed into a calibrated measure 1/3rd full and rodded the depth of the layer 25 times. This process is repeated a second and third time filling the measure. The measure is then weighed, and the mass per unit volume determined. If the void content is desired, the specific gravity of the aggregate is measured and used with the unit weight to calculate the void content as a percent.

Preferred Test Sample Size

25 kg (one full 5-gallon pail)

Number of Test Specimens

1

Test Specimen Size

Typically 14L, but determined by maximum aggregate size.
